Educational Programs
In the educational program ‘’Lesvos Geopark: From Tethys to the Aegean’’, the children make a journey of 300 million years though 90 kilometers, starting from Mytilene and reaching the protected area of the Petrified Forest, exploring the geosites of Lesvos Geopark, its rocks, the volcanic phenomenon and their relationship with the culture of Lesvos.
Did you know that in the area of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos 20 million years ago used to live many animals, both small-sized and gigantic.
20 million years ago there were many active volcanoes in the northeastern Aegean region. In the island of Lesvos 5 large volcanic centers were discovered.
19 million years ago, in the area of the Petrified Forest used to live one of the oldest mammals in Greece, the Lesvos Deinotherium.
Did you know that the first marine fossil park in Greece is located in Nissiopi, the islet located opposite the settlement of Sigri in the island of Lesvos?
