The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
During the summer months the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest organized a lot of events offering to its visitors a variety of activities in the open-air Parks of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, in the exhibition spaces and in its open-air amphitheater. Among its most popular events, are the afternoon tours at the Petrified Forest Parks. The tour of the Plaka Park in particular is a unique experience as it combines a scientific excursion at an area full of interesting fossil-bearing locations with a magnificent view of Sigri village with its picturesque architecture, of the islet of Nissiopi and the Aegean sea. Following the walking trails participants explored both parts of the Park and discovered petrified tree trunks, root nodes, root systems and lower trunk parts that belong to mainly broad-leaved and fruit-bearing plants, but also to various conifer species. They also had the chance to admire the impressive lying petrified trunk of a poplar tree in the coastal zone of Plaka Park, as well as the giant fossilized trunk of a cinnamon tree, 13.7 meters in perimeter and 3.70 meters in diameter, which is - according to the world bibliography - the largest standing fossilized tree trunk in the whole world. These tours conclude with enjoying and photographing the breathtaking sunset from the Park’s viewing spots. Watching the sun setting behind Nissiopi islet during the most magical hour of the day is a truly amazing experience!
All the Petrified Forest Parks are still open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00-16:00. For more information you can visit the museum’s website lesvosmuseum.gr
