Discovering the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a unique natural monument, is an unforgettable experience.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.

Guided Exploration through 50 Fossil Bearing Areas at the Petrified Forest Park of Plaka
A guided tour will take place on Saturday July 8, 2023 at 11 am! Participants of all ages are welcome to join us as we walk through 50 fossil bearing locations at the Plaka Petrified Forest Park.
Come for a smooth hike on the trails and see the largest petrified trunk with a perimeter of 14.5 meters! Meet the pine trees, cinnamon trees, oak trees, palm trees, laurel trees, and cypress trees and listen as they tell their stories as members of the petrified ecosystem. Learn about the formation of the Aegean and enjoy the fun hike!
The park is located 800 meters north of Sigri and is considered a protected fossil bearing area. Important plant fossils have been discovered from the coastal section of the park as well as the terrain.
Immerse yourself in a special geotope composed of more than fifty standing and downed petrified trunks of angiosperms and coniferous trees. Come see the largest standing petrified trunk in the world: a cinnamon tree of gigantic dimensions, with a perimeter of 13.5 meters and an impressive root system! Come walk to the coastal section of the park where you will find the downed trunk of a poplar which is 14 meters long!
The event starts at 11 am. Participants will all gather at the Museum.
