The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
Lesvos will welcome the UNESCO Committee of Geoparks Experts from 10 to 15 September 2021, who will evaluate the Lesvos Geopark in order to maintain the recognition as a "UNESCO Global Geopark". This extremely important distinction is valid for four years. All Global Geoparks participate in the evaluation process, which is under the supervision of UNESCO.
Lesvos due to its unique natural and cultural heritage managed to be designated as a Geopark, to be recognized as a "UNESCO Global Geopark" and to be included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network and the European Geoparks Network (20 September 2012), after the decision of the UNESCO Geoparks Office and in accordance with the Program Agreement signed between the Municipality of Lesvos, the University of the Aegean and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest for the creation and operation of the "LESVOS GEOPARK" (October 18, 2011).
The previous evaluation of the LESVOS GEOPARK was completed with great success in 2016. In order to maintain the distinction, Lesvos will be re-evaluated by a UNESCO Committee of Experts, which will carry out an on-site visit to the Lesvos Geopark.
The Museum has prepared the evaluation file of the LESVOS GEOPARK,which include data on the visiting geological and natural monuments of Lesvos which operate with quality standards according to UNESCO and where educational and tourist activities are carried out, the visiting cultural and archaeological sites, data of ecological interest (protected areas, flora, fauna, habitats, etc.), touristic infrastructure and thematic tourism activities, environmental education activities, local development and local products of Lesvos, cultural events, public awareness, management and promotion.
