The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
The most popular sports festival in Lesvos - Lesvos island Unesco Global Geopark - Λέσβος Παγκόσμιο Γεωπάρκο Unesco took place on Saturaday 25 and Sunday 26 September 2021 with great success and lots of participants. The route of Lesvos Relay 320 km crosses Lesvos uniting the most important emblematic geological landscapes and geosites and passing through important natural and cultural monuments, picturesque villages with welcoming people! This is the third consecutive event that takes place at the Lesvos Geopark.
The runners in many areas were accompanied by young and older friends who ran with them crossing 328 km around the whole island of Lesvos, through wonderful landscapes, impressive geosited, traditional villages and the unique protected area of Lesvos Petrified Forest, promoting magnificent images of natural wealth and landscapes of Lesvos. The relay race started from Mytilene, Sappho Square on Saturday 25 September at 9.00 am and crossed the whole island of Lesvos to end again at Sappho Square on Sunday 26 September at 17.30. The relay arrived in Sigri and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest at 20.00 on Saturday 25 September, where all the village welcomed the runners.
Lesvos Relay 320km was organized by the Association of Lesvos Runners, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the North Aegean Region, with the support of the Chamber of Lesvos, the Municipality of Mytilene and the Mynicipality of Western Lesvos. The event was also supported by «Rural regeneration through systemic heritage-led strategies — RURITAGE», HORIZON 2020.
