The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest invites you at a scientific excursion at the Bali-Alonia Petrified Fores on Saturday 9th October 2021 at 11.30. The excursion initially includes scientific presentation at the resting site next to the entrance of the Park and then a tour and acquaintance with the impressive fossil bearing sites.
At the same time, the Museum utilizing the internet and social networks, begins a social media campaign with the weekly presentation of the fossil bearing sites of the Bali-Alonia Petrified Forest Park.
The systematic excavations carried out in recent years by the Museum have brought to light important new fossil bearing sites adding valuable data to the image of the subtropical forest in the greater area of Lesvos 20,000,000 years ago. The conservation and promotion works at the fossil bearing sites in the Park, recently completed by the Museum with funding from the Operational Programme North Aegean, were implemented with the aim of making the Park accessible to all and highlighting its uniqueness, with respect for the natural landscape and they were also awarded at the Landscape Awards 2021 in the category Large Scale Landscape Design / Heritage & Culture.
