The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in the framework of its actions for the accessibility of the visually impaired and people with mobility problems in the monuments of the geological heritage and especially in the geosites of the Lesvos Geopark, participates in the ERASMUS + program Geology for the Visually Impaired and Disabled». This is an important program that will include the creation of educational applications for mobile phones aimed at giving the opportunity to people with visual impairments and mobility problems to discover our geological heritage and geosites of UNESCO Global Geoparks.
Within the framework of the Project, a special meeting of the partners was organized in Seville where the models created by the University of Patras were examined in order to make accessible geosites such as the petrified tree trunks of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, volcanic structures and geosites of erosion, that the participants had discovered during the inaugural meeting of the program which took place in Lesvos from 19 to 23 July 2021 at the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean and the Museum.The meeting in Seville was attended by the Director of the Museum, Professor Nikos Zouros and the Head of the Department of Educational Programs, Ms. Konstantina Bentana.
