The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
The Unesco evaluators were impressed by the Lesvos Petrified Forest, the southern, eastern and western Lesvos. The five-day evaluation of the Lesvos Geopark began on Saturday, September 10th with a presentation and detailed briefing by Prof. Nikos Zouros, Director of the Natural Museum History of the Lesvos Petrified Forestand and the Museum executives for the progress made by Geopark the last 5 years. Then, they explored the geological monuments, the culture and the producers of the southern and eastern part of the Lesvos Geopark and in particular they visited the areas Therma, Gera, Agiasos. They also toured the facilities of Therma Spa Lesvos, the Museum-Olive Mill Vrana, the facilities of the distillery Isidoros Arvanitis and the distillery Varvagianni and at they end they attended the Rock & Trail Agiasos mountain running race.
The evaluation continued on Sunday, September 12, in the area of western Lesvos, where they first visited the Women Agritourism Cooperative of Mesotopos, important volcanic geosites in the area of Eresos and Mesotopos. Then they toured the protected area of the Petrified Forest and the excavation sites along the new road Kalloni - Sigri, where they were informed about the new impressive findings and the successful efforts to promote and protect the Petrified Forest and the development of geotourism in Lesvos. They also visited the olive mill Antonis Tirpintiris and the facilities of the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos in Sigri.
