In the educational program ‘’Volcanoes and volcanic geosites of Lesvos’’, the children are invited to travel mentally millions of years back to the geological past of Lesvos, the Aegean and Greece and to become familiar with phenomena and processes that cannot be directly observed, such as the volcanic activity.

The children gather information in the exhibition halls of the Museum and find the relation of the volcanoes with the creation of the Petrified Forest, they learn about the large volcanoes of Lesvos, the volcanic rocks and the volcanic structures, the hot springs and the geothermal energy. Step by step they discover all the processes and changes that have contributed to the creation of todays volcanic landscapes, they get to know the volcanic geosites, the volcanic arc of Greece, the global distribution of volcanoes and how they were created. They submit proposals for the utilization of geothermal energy, hot springs and volcanic structures of Lesvos in accordance with the principles of sustainability.

 

The program includes:

  • Discussion on the phenomenon of volcanism with the help of the educational application of the Museum ‘’Petrified Forest of Lesvos’’.
  • Discussion on basic concepts such as earth structure, lithospheric plates, volcanoes, lava, magma volcanic rocks, volcanic geosites, geothermal, hot springs, etc
  • Gathering information from the exhibits and models of the permanent exhibitions of the Museum about volcanoes, volcanic rocks, the phenomenon of volcanic activity, hot springs and geothermal energy.
  • Recording the findings in the special educational cards.
  • Composition of observations and drawing conclusions.
  • Recording of proposals for the utilization of geothermal energy, hot springs and volcanic structures of Lesvos in accordance with the principles of sustainability.
