The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a place of education, knowledge and inspiration. Following the current theory and practices of Museum Education, it designs and implements educational programs for students of all levels of education, children of all ages and families.
The Museum operates the Lesvos Geopark and collaborates with many cultural, educational, research organizations and Museums. It is a founding member of the European and Global Geoparks Network, pioneered in the establishment of the network of the Museums of Lesvos, collaborates with schools and Environmental Education Centers, as well as with a significant number of research centers and universities in the framework of research activities.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
Two interesting excursions at the Petrified Forest in Bali Alonia, known also as “Kiria Apolithomeni” were implemented on 23 October and 6 November 2021 by the expert scientists of the Msuseum. Al the participants were really impressed by the unique fossils in their original location in the Park and the techniques and methods used for their promotion and maintenance. The good autumn weather created the right setting for a perfect experience.
Following the specially designed walking paths, they visited old and new fossil bearing sites, where had the opportunity to see and admire the unique fossils, and to be informed about the works for the protection and promotion of fossil sites, reconstruction of fossil logs and broken fractures and all the conservation works curried out with funding from the North Aegean Regional Operational Program and awarded at the Landscape Awards 2021 in the category Large Scale Landscape Design / Heritage & Culture.
The autumn activities are being continued on the weekend of November 13 and 14 at the Museum’s premises in Sigri. The scientists of the Museum invite you to a different tour of the Museum's exhibitions with the presentation of 20 impressive exhibits narrating hidden stories that you certainly do not know! At the same time, the participants can be informed about the process of identifying the fossilized plants from the impressive leaf imprints that have been found in the volcanic materials during the excavations.
