In the educational program ‘’I adopt and protect the Petrified Forest – Participate in cleaning and conservation activities of fossils’’, the children are called to become fossil conservators and as the conservators of the Museum , they have the opportunity to clean fossilized parts of tree trunks and leaves from the Petrified Forest of Lesvos.

In the outdoor parks of Petrified Forest or in the educational area of the conservation laboratory of the Museum, the children learn about the methodology of cleaning and conservation of fossils, tools and materials, their chemical properties, the advantages of the maintenance program and participate in the cleaning and maintenance of specially selected fossil plants, facing problems and challenges.

The program includes:

• Discussion about the job of the conservator.

• Discussion on basic concepts such as fossil, excavation, fossil cleaning, fossil conservation, etc.

• Gathering information about the plants of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos through the fossils and the models of the permanent exhibitions of the Museum.

• Discussion on the process and methods of cleaning and preserving fossils.

• Familiarity with materials and tools for cleaning and preserving fossils.

• Participation in cleaning and conservation of plant fossils.

• Recording the findings in the special educational cards.

• Composition of observations, extraction and presentation of conclusions.
