The educational program of the Museum ‘’Natural processes on our planet. Lets discover the earthquakes’’ is an exciting journey into the world of earthquakes and focuses on training and preparing for an earthquake and learning about protection measures before, during and after an earthquake.

In the earthquake simulator of the Museum, the children experience the large earthquake of Vrisa as well as other catastrophic earthquakes from Greece and all over the world, such as the earthquake of Kozani, California, Taiwan, Iran and apply the protection measures. The experience of the earthquake movement in the earthquake simulator and the contact with the earthquake phenomenon helps to eliminate the feeling of panic and raise awareness of the need of proper preparation for the confrontation of the earthquake risk.

The program includes:

  • Discussion on basic concepts such as earth structure, lithospheric plates, folds, earthquake, earthquake waves, tsunami, soil liquefaction, subsidence, rock falls, etc.
  • Discussion on prevention and protection measures before, during and after an earthquake.
  • Gathering information from the exhibits and models of the permanent exhibitions of the Museum for earthquakes and acquaintance with the phenomenon.
  • Observation of real-time earthquake vibration recording in the Museum seismograph and observation of the active earth map of Greece.
  • Educational activity of creating an artificial earthquake by the children, acquaintance with the earthquake risk.
  • Observation and description of a fault in the open space of the Museum.
  • Participation in the experiential educational activity of simulating the earthquake of Vrisa in Lesvos as well as catastrophic earthquakes from all over the world in the earthquake simulator of the Museum and application of protection measures during an earthquake.
  • Recording the findings in the special educational cards.
  • Composition of observations, extraction and presentation of conclusions.
  • Participation in educational games.
